Google has recently unveiled the call for entries for the 8th edition of its Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program, this year spotlighting startups utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The initiative aims to address vital challenges and catalyze new opportunities throughout Africa.
In a continent where digital transformation is gaining pace, startups stand at the forefront of innovation, powering economic growth and tackling major societal issues across various sectors, including fintech, agritech, healthcare, and education.
The upcoming cohort will participate in a three-month, equity-free virtual program from June to September 2024. It offers the following benefits:
Applications are open from April 29 to May 20, 2024. Startups that are either based in Africa or are developing solutions specifically for African markets, and utilize AI/ML innovatively, are encouraged to apply online.
Since its launch in 2018, the program has supported 106 startups across 17 African countries, helping them raise over $263 million, and creating more than 2,800 jobs. Participants gain early access to new Google products, tools, and a network of industry experts. They also join the Google for Startups Accelerator Global Community, which enhances collaborative opportunities and ongoing support.
The initiative doesn't stop there; it includes specific programs like the Google for Startups Accelerator: Women Founders Africa Programme, launched to empower women entrepreneurs specifically. This program provides extensive resources, investor connections, and mentorship to help women founders scale their innovations and contribute effectively to their communities.
"We are committed to nurturing the next wave of African AI innovators. AI holds transformative potential across diverse sectors, and we’re excited to facilitate this growth,"
stated Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startups Ecosystem, Africa at Google.
This move underscores Google’s broader commitment to harnessing AI for societal good and fostering an inclusive tech ecosystem in Africa.
