With the initial excitement surrounding Meta's Threads app gradually fading, Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri are taking steps to revamp the X (formerly known as Twitter) look-alike app. The app experienced a surge in users during its first two weeks of launch but now faces a declining user base.

To address this, Zuckerberg disclosed in an internal company town hall that they are working on new features for Threads, including a desktop version and the capability to search posts and replies. These additions aim to stabilize the app and bring it on par with competitors.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, echoed Zuckerberg's sentiments, emphasizing that they are serious about competing with X. In an interview with The Washington Post, Mosseri revealed that the team has several features in the pipeline, including the ability to send direct messages.

The Threads team's main priorities include improving user experience by enhancing the algorithms for content curation, allowing users to view posts exclusively from people they follow, and facilitating communication between users.

However, it's not all positive news for Threads, as Mark Zuckerberg disclosed that over half of the app's initial users have already left. Despite achieving the impressive milestone of 100 million users within five days of its launch on July 10, Threads has only managed to add an additional 19 million users in the 21 days following the surge. Zuckerberg, however, sought to reassure Meta staff, stating that such a drop in growth is a "normal" part of the app's life cycle.

As Meta Platforms Inc. continues to fine-tune Threads with new features and improvements, the company is determined to regain user engagement and competitiveness in the ever-evolving social media landscape.
