In a recent rebranding move, Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, has revealed a new logo for the platform, opting for a "minimalist art deco" X design. Musk indicated that the logo might undergo further changes and refinements in the future. Twitter's CEO, Linda Yaccarino, confirmed the selection by sharing the design on her Twitter account, expressing excitement about the new direction.

Musk had previously sought design ideas from his vast follower base and seems to have settled on a logo he had previously hinted at through a flickering video posted on his Twitter feed. The X logo holds particular significance for Musk, as it represents his vision for an "everything app" he has pledged to launch in the future, with Twitter likely being the platform to bring this concept to life. He has previously referred to Twitter as a stepping stone towards creating the all-encompassing "X" app.

After acquiring Twitter in October of the previous year, Musk merged the company into an entity called X Corp, under the parent X Holdings Corp. Additionally, he recently announced the formation of an AI-focused company named xAI.

The chosen logo was crowd-sourced and had been shared by Twitter user Sawyer Merritt, who co-founded a sustainable clothing business. Although the font had been used for a discontinued podcast, it bears resemblance to a font used by Indian dance music artist Kxlider.

The concept behind the "X" app is inspired by WeChat, a Chinese app renowned for its versatility, allowing users to perform a myriad of functions from messaging to making payments and ordering taxis. Musk had previously expressed interest in emulating the success of WeChat on Twitter by creating a platform that offers a broad range of features.

Linda Yaccarino provided some insights into how she envisions X to function, mentioning that it would be AI-powered and centred around audio, video, messaging, and payments/banking. As of the rebranding, Twitter's desktop version now features the new "X" logo, replacing its iconic bird symbol, and the official Twitter account has transitioned to the X brand.

However, analysts have warned that this rebranding move comes with considerable risks, considering Twitter's competitive landscape. The platform has been facing financial challenges due to advertisers withholding spending, and the emergence of a potential rival called Threads, launched by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta.

Mike Proulx, research director at the analysis firm Forrester, noted that Musk's decision to change Twitter's app name to "X" could be a high-risk move, as it effectively resets the brand's identity, erasing over 15 years of cultural recognition. This move comes at a time when the competition is fierce, making the rebranding endeavour an ambitious undertaking.
