Subsea Service Project Manager


Join our highly capable and successful EMEA Subsea Project Team, which delivers the best optical turnkey solutions to submarine cable operators in the industry.


This is an outstanding opportunity for a technically aware person wishing to pursue a project management career delivering technically sophisticated optical telecommunication solutions that provide the plumbing for the world’s internet. The position is flexible in terms of location but ideally within Europe and will benefit from the support of the experienced team and completing a formal project management qualification of either PMP or Prince2.


There will be opportunities for international travel and attending customer project review meetings.

As a project manager in EMEA Subsea, you will be involved in:

  • Preparing projects for kick-off. This is the most important stage of a project and sets the scene for meaningful success.
  • Preparing and driving project schedules using industry-standard tools.
  • Engaging and negotiating with Ciena suppliers of resources and materials to ensure the projects meet the requirements of time, cost, and specification.
  • Teaming up with Ciena product and project engineering to ensure all aspects of the technical solution is documented, controlled, and communicated.
  • Maintaining a risk, issue and change control regime within the project and using judgement to assess the impact that events may have on project outcomes.
  • Monitoring and controlling the project budget ensuring the project delivers value for money but keeping a look out for opportunities to add new value.
  • Developing close, meaningful working relationships with the customer and keeping them up to date on the project’s progress.

As a Project Manager in EMEA Subsea, you will develop:

  • An understanding of submarine telecommunications solutions, both optical and mechanical.
  • Be fluent in the management and financial understanding of international projects.
  • Be a strong and confident communicator in a wide variety of circumstances including internal executive reviews and customer business meetings.
  • Be authoritative in the use of desktop applications such as the Microsoft application suite and project planning software.

Education And Experience

A formal education in a technical or science-related subject as well as experience in telecoms would provide a good foundation for this role. Most of all we need our project managers to have a passion and a determination to succeed. Projects do not always go to plan, that is when they get exciting and become a great opportunity to learn and develop skills!
